If you're planning a trip to Cairns, one of the most common questions is:

Both islands are beautiful and located just off Cairns, but they offer very different experiences. After living in Cairns for over 10 years and helping thousands of travellers plan their reef trips, here is a clear, honest comparison to help you choose the right one for your holiday.

🌴 Green Island: Easy, Relaxed & Family-Friendly

Green Island is the closest reef island to Cairns, located about 45 minutes by ferry. It is part of the Great Barrier Reef and is one of the easiest reef experiences you can do from the mainland.

Why people love Green Island:

  • Easy access from Cairns (no long boat ride)

  • Sandy beach and calm swimming areas

  • Beginner-friendly snorkelling

  • Glass-bottom boat tours

  • Semi-submarine experience

  • Scuba diving

  • Restaurants and facilities on the island

  • Perfect for families and first-time snorkellers

Green Island is ideal if you want a relaxed day, especially if you're travelling with children or if it's your first time snorkelling.

Things to keep in mind:

Because it’s so easy to access, Green Island can get busy during peak seasons. Also, being an inner reef location, the coral is not as vibrant as the outer reef.

🌿 Fitzroy Island: Natural, Scenic & More Adventurous

Fitzroy Island is also about 45 minutes from Cairns but feels much more natural and less developed than Green Island.

It is a great choice if you enjoy walking, exploring, and want a more "island adventure" feel.

Why people love Fitzroy Island:

  • Beautiful rainforest surroundings

  • Scenic walking tracks and hikes

  • Stunning summit views

  • Famous Nudey Beach

  • Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (Fitzroy Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre)

  • Great for photography and nature lovers

  • Quieter and more relaxed atmosphere

Nudey Beach is often listed as one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia, and the walks on the island are a highlight for many visitors.

Things to keep in mind:

Fitzroy Island has fewer facilities than Green Island. Most beaches are coral beaches rather than soft sand, and snorkelling conditions can vary depending on weather and tides.

Which Island Has Better Snorkelling?

If snorkelling is your main priority, Green Island is usually the better option for beginners.

It offers easier access to the water and more sheltered conditions.

Fitzroy Island can still offer good snorkelling, but visibility and marine life can be more inconsistent.

Which Island Is Better for Families?

It offers:

  • Calm swimming areas

  • More facilities

  • Easy snorkelling

  • Activities like glass-bottom boats

It’s especially good for children or first-time reef visitors.

Which Island Is Better for Couples or Active Travellers?

It depends on your travel style:

Choose Green Island if you want:

  • Relaxation

  • Beach time

  • Easy reef access

Choose Fitzroy Island if you want:

  • Hiking and nature

  • More adventure

  • A quieter island experience

💡 My Honest Recommendation (After 10+ Years in Cairns)

If you are visiting Cairns for the first time and can only choose one island, I usually recommend Green Island.

It is the easiest and most accessible way to experience the Great Barrier Reef and suits most travellers.

However, if you love nature, walking and a more rugged island feel, Fitzroy Island is a beautiful alternative.
